From Tina's Point of View
Tina Sharp is the president of Council 43. This
message posted October 11, 2007.
October finds us well underway
The activities and the meetings either have already begun or will
do so for each of our 15 Units spread across our adopted state of
Florida. This web site will feature the hi lights of our New York
State United Teacher retiree activities occurring in the various
locations. If you are a retiree from any New York State public school
district or AFT district from anywhere in the nation, we have opened
our doors to you and any guests you may wish to bring to a meeting.
In September TRIF's Council 43 leadership held its annual meeting
with delegates from the all 15 Units. The central theme shared with
these delegates involved the concern of the NEW YORK STATE UNITED
TEACHERS organization for Educational Issues, Teacher Working Conditions,
and the Status of Retirees. But this organization also clearly committed
itself to a much broader matter, PUBLIC HEALTH.
Three major items NYSUT is addressing
-
Many of you know that each year Council 43 has
asked local Units to have some type of collection for one of the
most frightening of childhood illnesses, Juvenile Diabetes. The
amount raised last year, $645, may seem a small amount from all
15 Units but it was most important when we realize that retired
teachers DO CARE! Will we have the support drive again in 2007-8?
Of course, and, hopefully, we can expand this campaign to raise
both more funds and more awareness that may someday lead to a
cure.

NYSUT's FILE OF LIFE is the second item that directly
affects each and every one of us. What is it? The organization
has made available a 4" by 5" packet with a mini magnet
on the back to allow it to be placed on your refrigerator. Within
the packet is a folded sheet that allows you to place EMERGENCY
CONTACTS, MEDICAL DATA, MEDICATIONS, DOSAGE and virtually every
item necessary if, in an emergency, someone might need to determine
how best to help you. This bright red packet, emblazoned with
white letters reading FILE OF LIFE will be easily spotted in a
crisis if on the refrigerator. Would you like one? Unit Presidents
may contact NYSUT MEMBER BENEFITS for a mass order to meet requests
of its members.
-
Third on NYSUT's list of public concerns involving
health matters is the very topic of my last message, BREAST CANCER
AWARENESS. With retiree Ely Rotheim providing the leadership for
Council 43's involvement, we hope many of you either chose to
participate or send in your donation to help meet NYSUT's goal
for this year, $1,000,000. A great deal of money sought for a
very serious illness -- 200,000 will be diagnosed and 40,000 will
die THIS YEAR. More
information on how you support this cause ...
